So I've been thinking about writing this for awhile, and recently I noticed a lot of people are commenting in ways that canmake the artist feel uncomfortable.

This journal is about commenting etiquette.

If you comment like this I'm not mad. Please don't feel like I'm targeting anyone or anything- it's just something I've noticed a ton of people do.

--------------------------------------------------------

comment etiquette

to start out, I'd like to show you some of the types of comments I see A LOT

the self-pity comment

example:

"This is really pretty. I'll never be able to draw like this I'm awful at drawing"

this is the most awkward way to get attention- the artist feels pressured to give you attention and compliment you. This can be super hard on the artist.

INSTEAD, make it positive!

"This is really pretty. I've always wanted to draw like this. Maybe if you had time, could you critique my work?"

(( Mau5: I actually get a lot of those self pity comments and honestly, it's getting very annoying. Please stop))

the jokester comment

example:

"wow such doge such great"

at first this comment is kind of funny. But usually when one joke is made many people tend to follow along. I've seen art with 10 joke comments and only 2 actually comments. Please use comments to actually comment, not to just make fun of it.

(okay with good friends though)

The Irrelevant Comment

example:
*you upload a picture of apples*
commenter:
"oranges! :"D"

I can't think of an example for this because an irrelevant comment refers to a certain piece of art. Personally, when I receive irrelevant comments to the piece of art I upload, it makes me very confused because I'm not sure if what I drew is a reference to something or something else. Usually I don't reply to these comments and feel bad later for not replying to them since every comment, even irrelevant ones, show that you took the time to comment. And in return, I believe it's only fair that I take the time to reply.

the denier

example:

replies "no I suck at art" when you compliment them.

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER say no to a compliment. This is only okay when you know the person really well and you are joking. When you do this you are pretty much telling the complimenter that they have bad taste. You are also making it a waste of their time to comment. Just accept it.

the cheapskate

example:

"this is too expensive"

first of all let me just say that this is the WORST.

Minimum wage in my state is 8.50 an hour. That means that a lot of worked is UNDERPRICED. Even if someone is selling stick figured for 100$ don't say anything.

The Overlooker

example:
"what's the price of _______ ?/Is this base free to use?"

Please. Just. READ BEFORE YOU COMMENT. Of course, feel free to ask questions, but it can become tedious to explain something to someone when it's clearly written in the description. This can also be tiresome for the artist.

the comparison

example:

"hey this looks just like___"

no no no no no no no no just NO. Even if this is meant as a compliment this IS NEVER going to come out the right way. People WANT original art. You are pretty much telling them that you think they copied someone else. THIS IS NEVER A COMPLIMENT GUYS.

The Attention Seeker

example:
"wow, your art is so beautiful/you're the greatest artist ever/you're like an art god/let's be best friends!"
(usually there is more to these comments than just what's above)

These kinds of comments are not the worst thing in the world, in fact, they can make the artist feel good about themselves. :3 However, personally, I've received comments similar to these almost every time I upload a piece of art.  From the same person. over and over and over and over and over again.  It's good to know that there are people that look up to you, however, you don't have to comment on every little thing an artist uploads and get all mushy over it.  Sometimes, the artist may see this as you just trying to seek attention and become friends with them and they may become suspicious of you.

and lastly:

the cruel critiquer

example:

"your color choice is ugly. That hand is badly drawn."

If you are going to critique work, never ever just state what is wrong. State what you like, what could be changed and (important) how they could change it. If you have the time link them examples, tutorials, references, anything!

-------------------------------------------------------------

3 rules of commenting:

1. Keep it positive!

Make the artist smile! Comments shouldn't be used for hate.

2. Use somewhat good grammar.

no one wants to have to decode your comment!

3. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

maybe you really hate that person right now and all you want to do is tell them to die in a hole. NEVER DO THIS. EVER. If I find out you told someone to die, I will personally find you and beat you up. (okay no I won't but still) Some people take their comments very seriously and it can be extremely hard on them.

I'm a hot headed girl with a tendency to self destruct. I have been drawing for two years??? ( I'm bisexual to~) My fave bands are Five Finger Death Punch and Korn and I love anything Heavy Metal. I am into Homestuck, Adventure Time, Attack on Titan, werewolves, cute lingerea, OCS, and shit like that. I'm a very angry person at the moment, tired and sad. But I am in a good place and I keep my head high. Come talk to me :heart::heart:
